Ever since we relaunched Awful Announcing in 2010, it’s been an annual tradition to count down the best broadcast bloopers and gaffes from the year that was.  This year, our countdown is bigger and badder and more bloopery than ever before with TWENTY of our funniest and most cherished clips from the last 12 months.  If you’re in the mood to walk down memory lane, you can check out our blooper reels from 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 at the links.

Enjoy our Christmas gift to you – it’s the Top 20 Broadcast Bloopers of 2014.  No sportscasters were harmed in the making of this list… well, at least not harmed too badly…

20) Oklahoma crashes the ESPN set… literally

Even after all these months, Lou Holtz’s face is still priceless.  I guess those sets aren’t built to withstand the weight of an entire college football roster.

19) “I’ll take the wide receiving condom”

So many puns… so little time…

18) Robert Flores and Adnan Virk battle the telestrator

Two of our SportsCenter favorites took a trip to the telestrator to highlight an amusing video of the Auburn band celebrating their miraculous victory over Alabama.  Things were going well, until the punchline to the entire segment went missing.  They asked for this video to be featured on Awful Announcing.  They got it.

17) MLS reporter gets beaned

Kelli Tennant is tough.  She’s not a hockey player, but she is an MLS sideline reporter!  It takes a certain level of concentration to be able to plow through a report after getting nailed in the head with a soccer ball.

16) Mike Ditka previews the wrong game

You have to complement Keyshawn Johnson for trying to be as gentle as possible in correcting Iron Mike in letting him know he wasn’t quite on the same page as the rest of the Countdown crew.

15) “Fouled off once again… and it’s a home run. Wow.

A White Sox announcer makes the list of broadcast bloopers and it’s not Hawk Harrelson?!?  What kind of weird alternate timeline is this?  Steve Stone (stepping in on play by play) shows us all how not to call a home run.  Maybe Hawk is on to something with the whole going silent thing…

14) Rex Hudler thinks the moon is a planet

We really should have a daily feature throughout the year solely focused on Rex Hudler quotes.  But for now, we’ll have to be satisfied with trying to figure out how Rex made it through this many years thinking the moon was a planet.  At least he didn’t say it was made of spare ribs.

13) Lou Holtz discovers a new language

Can you imagine how inspiring it must have been to hear this as a college athlete in the locker room before a game?

12) It’s not a proper blooper countdown without John Sterling The voice of the Yankees is the gift that keeps on giving when it comes to our yearly list of the best broadcast bloopers.  Here’s his attempt at calling a double steal.  See if you can follow along.

11) Fox News and MSNBC are equal opportunity screw-ups

Somehow after UConn won the NCAA Tournament, both the conservative and liberal leaning cable news outlets managed to goof by calling the NCAA the “NAACP.”  But at least neither one of them erroneously reported Pele’s death like CNN did.
