Over the weekend at the Kentucky Derby, “Extra” correspondent Charissa Thompson (who you may also know from her day job at Fox Sports Live) caught up with NBC’s Josh Elliott about leaving Good Morning America for NBC Sports. Elliott made his NBC Sports debut this past weekend from Churchill Downs.
There were some interesting headlines regarding Elliott’s departure from ABC where he became a morning TV star and called the majority of the headlines about him and his departure from ABC false. In fact, he spoke in glowing terms about his former and current employer. The man certainly gets an A+ in the public relations department.
Thompson asked Elliott to set the record straight and he said, “I had a wonderful offer from ABC on the table and I had a wonderful offer from NBC Sports on the table. There wasn’t a bad choice. It was just going to be which great choice was best for me… this was a great thing for me in the end to do,” adding he was “over the moon happy.”
When asked if he’d possibly replace Matt Lauer, Elliott said, “I am an NBC Sports employee. Unless The Today Show comes under the aegis of NBC Sports, I came here to be part of a great team.” It’s hard to blame Josh for this decision, but for those who think he’ll be pushing out Matt Lauer, it looks like he’s sticking to sports for now.
