A new documentary about Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is currently in production and is expected to air on HBO in early 2015. HBO Sports and Mandalay Sports Media, in association with Iconomy Multi-Media & Entertainment, are aiming to highlight Abdul-Jabbar’s impact on and success in basketball while also showing his journey through many landmark situations over the last 50 years.

The President of HBO Sports, Ken Hershman, commented on the upcoming documentary:

“Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is a legendary figure and an American sports icon. While he has lived so much of his life in the media spotlight, his extraordinary story has never been explored in depth, and we are grateful to Kareem and his team for allowing us to bring this story to life.”

Even if you’re not a basketball fan, this should be a fascinating story to watch. Abdul-Jabbar is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer and won six titles and six MVP awards. Off the court, Abdul-Jabbar has been a public figure at the center of many interesting stories for a long time. From his request to be traded to a more diverse market and his widely discussed name change, to recently being outspoken about the Donald Sterling controversy. He’s also pretty familiar with pop culture, landing roles in TV shows and movies.

HBO Sports has already set the bar extremely high with their other productions, so there’s a lot to be excited about for this new documentary.

Honestly, we’re just hoping Abdul-Jabbar is forced to answer some of these questions from Captain Oveur:
