Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti thought it would be a brilliant idea to name a street after Dodgers voice and American icon Vin Scully. Citing support on social media and a request from Vin's own daughter-in-law, the mayor told KABC-TV that he would begin work on renaming a street in Vin's honor. When Garcetti made his idea public, there didn't seem to be any opposition. But there was and it came from Scully himself.
Scully is a modest man. He did not cooperate with a 2010 biography written by Curt Smith and he has turned down numerous offers to write a book on his life. So it should not come as a surprise that Vin would shoot down the City's proposal to honor him.
In a statement issued on his behalf by the Dodgers, Vin said: "The mayor of Los Angeles has a great deal more important things to do than name a street after me," suggesting Garcetti rename a street after the late team owner Walter O'Malley or his son, Peter instead.
Garcetti tweeted that he would respect Scully's wishes to not name a street after him.

It's too bad that Scully won't go through with it. Perhaps this will have to be done posthumously and let's hope that day is later rather than sooner.
