The NFL's ratings for Week 1 of game action were strong, as expected. The Giants-Cowboys matchup on NBC's Sunday Night Football drew a 16.6 overnight rating and a final viewership total of 25.4 million viewers for the game. 2013 marks the fourth straight year that the Sunday evening opener drew an overnight of at least 16 and was the third-highest rated overnight for NBC's Sunday night opener since 2006.
Meanwhile in the afternoon, Fox drew a 17.8 overnight for the Packers-49ers matchup in the 4 PM slot, its best Week 1 overnight rating ever. Over on CBS, their mess of regional action at 1 PM drew an 11.2 overnight, a rise of 8% from last year and the highest rated single-header debut for CBS in 14 years.
There's no real point in examining the nuances of the ratings from Week 1, other than to say "Americans love the NFL", but you knew that already.
