Throughout July we're on a quest to definitively name the greatest announcing call in the history of sports.  We started with a list of 64 (the top 32 of which were seeded) that will be narrowed down to 1 at the end of the month that will earn the greatest of all-time title thanks to your votes.  Each day will bring a list of new matchups as we march our way through the tournament.  There are certainly some heavy favorites, but also some upsets in the making along the way.  Throughout the first round, polls will be open for a day until the next batch of matchups are published.

With a tip of the cap to the WGC Match Play, each bracket will also pay tribute to one of the great announcers in sports.  Day 5 is the bottom half of the Pat Summerall region…

3) "He did it, he did it, Flutie did it!"

Doug Flutie's Hail Mary to Gerard Phelan was a miraculous turn of events that saw Boston College defeat Miami at the Orange Bowl during the 1984 season. The dramatics lead to Flutie being awarded the Heisman Trophy. And the call by Dan Davis began the legend of Flutie doing whatever "it" is.

"The slipper still fits!"

Gus Johnson burst onto the March Madness scene when he broadcast Princeton's upset of UCLA in 1996. But, it was this call of Gonzaga's dramatic victory over Florida in the 1999 Sweet 16 that made Johnson a fan favorite. The only question is, what happens first? Gus Johnson calls another NCAA Tournament game, or Gonzaga makes it past the Sweet 16?

6) "Hello Heisman!"

Ohio State fans have their "Holy Buckeye" moment in our Top 64, so it's only fair to include this memorable punt return by current ESPN College Gameday analyst Desmond Howard against OSU in 1991. This play showcased a player encountering his moment of destiny, and it was captured perfectly by Keith Jackson.

"The Mountaineers have just beaten the Michigan Wolverines!"

Sorry, Michigan fans. AA giveth, and AA taketh away. The upset by Appalachian State over #5 Michigan in 2007 shocked the college football world. And clearly, it shocked the ASU radio team of David Jackson and Steve Brown more than anybody.

2) "The band is out on the field!"

It's a play that's been seen so many times, it has come to be known simply as "The Play." Cal versus Stanford in 1982. On a miraculous, last-second return featuring laterals and an ill-timed marching band performance, the Bears upset John Elway and Stanford. But, would this play be as legendary without Joe Starkey's amazing call?

"I don't believe it, I don't believe it!"

The legendary Merrill Reese has seen it all as Eagles radio announcer, but most of it has occurred at the Meadowlands. By our count, there were at least three "miracles" that happened in the old or new Meadowlands, all of them resulting in miraculous Eagles victories. But, the best announcing call is also the original from 1978, featuring a cameo from current ESPNer Herman Edwards

7) "Yes sir!"

Two old bears convened for one of the most iconic moments in sports history. To listen to the highlights of that incredible back nine is a trip down memory lane for any golf fan. However, the climactic birdie by Jack Nicklaus on the 71st hole of the 1986 Masters, as called by Verne Lundquist, is the truly lasting moment that will be replayed as long as The Masters exists.

"Caught by Westbrook for a touchdown! Incredible!"

Another memorable moment for Michigan football, another iconic call by the legendary Keith Jackson. This time though, Michigan was on the wrong end of a Kordell Stewart Hail Mary. For some reason though, this clip, from 1994 makes me feel really, really old.
