The Boston Globe reports several changes to Boston Celtics broadcasts this season amongst the game and studio personnel.  Perhaps the most interesting development is the addition of a new name to the industry – former Celtic and celebrated recovery story Chris Herren.

Perhaps you've seen or heard about Herren's story through his book or the documentary Unguarded.  Two years ago the Emmy nominated documentary about Herren's basketball career, drug use, and incredible recovery was featured by ESPN Films.

Herren will now take his inspirational story to the broadcast booth for a team he played 25 games for in the 2000-2001 season.  He will work a few road games this year for CSNNE alongside Mike Gorman as part of a rotating panel of analysts.  Franchise mainstay Tommy Heinsohn will be the analyst for Celtic home games..

Another interesting development is that Herren will have a partner for the games he announces – Celtics President of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge, which presents an intriguing set of circumstances themselves.  From a broadcast standpoint, Ainge has plenty of experience calling games for Turner so perhaps this is the best way the Celtics and CSNNE feel they can work Herren into the job.

Who knows if Chris Herren has a future ahead of him as a television analyst, but it's cool that he's going to get an opportunity to call NBA games for his former team.  Here's hoping he has some success in the broadcast booth and continues to inspire others with his journey.
