ESPN has won plaudits from many soccer fans for their truly outstanding coverage of the sport.  Well, today marked a momentous occasion as ESPN moved the Manchester derby from ESPN2 to the mothership and promoted it as one of the biggest English Premier League games of all time.  Unfortunately for the red half of Manchester, the nouveau riche Manchester City took the derby 1-0 and now are in the driver’s seat for the EPL title.

However, City haven’t yet won the title.  They sit tied with United on 83 points, but their superior goal differential has them on top of the league based on that tiebreaker.  Both sides still have two games to play, and with City’s record of spotty performances in the clutch, and a difficult trip to 5th placed Newcastle on the horizon, the title race is far from over.  Unfortunately… someone didn’t alert the SportsCenter Twitter feed.

I can’t say I blame @SportsCenter for mistaking the game for the title decider, after all, ESPN has been hyping the game as such for a week.  However, this gaffe could stand as the Dewey Defeats Truman moment of the 2011-2012 EPL season if Manchester City stumble in their last two games and United ultimately lifts the title.
