Legendary play by play man Dick Enberg slowly retired from the national sports scene over the last several years, but that doesn’t mean he’s out of work at age 77.  Enberg has been a television play by play man for the San Diego Padres since 2010.  We haven’t heard much from Dick in his Padres duties, but this clip is sure to make the rounds in the blogosphere for the decidedly “creepy old man” edge to it.

In the bottom of the ninth, Padres ball girl Lisa (no last name given) makes this great catch reaching over the rail.  That’s when Enberg and broadcast partner Mark Grant go into hyper-overdrive.  First, Enberg tries telling a bad joke – “That’s the catch of the day… I mean… the girl… caught the ball.”  You see, because “catch of the day” could be used to describe both an attractive woman and a play made on a baseball diamond.  Ah, yes.  Then, Enberg drops “hubba hubba” like a sledgehammer upon the unsuspecting masses to take us into a previously unknown realm of discomfort for a sports telecast.

Enberg is one of the most revered broadcasters of all-time and I’m sure he meant no harm, but yikes was that uncomfortable.  If there are any updates on Enberg succesfully buying Lisa a Carl’s burger, we’ll keep you posted.
