nssa

The National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association is an organization of sports media members based in Salisbury, North Carolina. It was formed in 1959 to honor local sportscasters and writers, but eventually branched out nationally. There’s been an annual awards program since 1960, the year Lindsey Nelson and Red Smith took home the first awards for sportscaster and sportswriter of the year, respectively. Each year, the 700 NSSA members elect the winners for each award. Over the years, the likes of Vin Scully, Dick Enberg, Al Michaels, John Madden, Peter Gammons, and Bob Ryan have all collected awards from the NSSA. For a full list of the National winners, you can click that link you just read over.

This May 14-16 will be the NSSA’s 52nd Annual Awards Weekend, when the organization will honor its latest Hall of Fame inductees–Brent Musburger, Bob Uecker and Bob Ryan–the national sportscaster and sportswriter of the year, and 110 state sportscasters and sportswriters of the year. He moved onto ESPN, where he has worked (also at ABC) since 1991. Tirico currently serves as play-by-play announcer on ESPN’s Monday Night Football, as well as ESPN’s and ABC’s NBA and college football coverage. He also is ABC’s lead golf announcer, serves as ESPN studio host for major events and contributes to ESPN Radio. Tirico won a Sports Emmy nomination for his work on Monday Night Football in 2007.

In addition to his SI and si.com work, King has appeared on HBO’s Inside the NFL, where the show won three Emmys during his tenure.
