It’s hard to believe that ESPN the Magazine has been around for 10 years now. It seems like just yesterday that I was throwing it in the trash. What was that? Oh that WAS yesterday??? My fault (I kid, I kid). In all honesty I’m amazed that they can put out that much content every single week, the thing is about 14 magazines packed into one and is an A.D.D. Kid’s dream publication.

Well now they’re taking their game to ESPN.com and they’ve just a.d.d.ed (see what I did there?) a new fancy website. Via Media Week….

ESPN the Magazine (ESPN.com)

So as ESPN.com soft-launches a new channel for ESPN The Magazine, the idea that the site still needed an online extension of the magazine seemed counterintuitive.

But Robbyn Footlick, executive editor of multimedia for the magazine, said that while ESPN.com has its Page 2 section, it’s better known for its sports scores, stats and fantasy content than for the humor and offbeat news that are the forte of the biweekly magazine. The hope is that by bulking up that sort of content, visitors will extend their stays on the site instead of going to sites like Collegehumor.com or YouTube.com.

“We’re offering a place for users to have some fun with sports and experience a different kind of content that’s not just sports stats, scores,” Footlick said. “Look at ESPN.com as the meat and potatoes. Page 2 and [the magazine channel] is kind of like the dessert.”

The site is pretty massive and it even has blogs! They look like the blogs that we’re on the regular site but they’re still blogs. There are also links (one to Slate) and a ton of video. It’s not a bad looking site in all honesty and you could spend some considerable time there. That is if you didn’t already get all the info you wanted from the regular .com site.
