The Walter Camp Football Foundation “Distinguished American” award is given to “an individual who has utilized his or her talents to attain great success in business, private life or public service and who may have accomplished that which no other has done”. Plenty of sports broadcasters have received the award, including Joe Theismann last year, Robin Roberts in 2009, and Pat Summerall in 2004. The 2014 recipient will be CBS Sports legend Verne Lundquist.
Awards are no stranger to Lundquist. He’s a former seven-time Texas Sportscaster of the Year, a member of the Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Game, a member of the Sun Bowl Hall of Fame, and a former recipient of the Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football award, presented by the National Football Foundation. This award is just another honor in an amazing career that’s still going strong during CBS’s sports coverage.
Fellow broadcaster Jerome Bettis will also be honored at the awards banquet in January as the Walter Camp Man of the Year.
