Gary Cohen, Ron Darling and Keith Hernandez on the SNY Mets broadcast.

If you’re going to open a broadcast by referencing local landmarks, you might want to make sure you have their names correct. As Sean Fitz-Gerald of The National Post notesSportsnet New York’s Ron Darling didn’t do that Wednesday, opening the call of Wednesday’s Mets’ game in Toronto against the Blue Jays with
You’ve got the Rogers Centre, you’ve got the Sky Needle, you’ve got beautiful Lake Ontario, and the Mets and Blue Jays coming up after this commercial.” Here’s the clip:

In fairness to Darling, it’s at least possible to see how he got there. The Rogers Centre used to be known as the SkyDome, the CN Tower is right next to it, and its appearance definitely can recall a needle. A portmanteau of the SkyDome and Seattle’s Space Needle isn’t completely unreasonable, especially when you consider that the Mets don’t regularly head to Toronto. At least Darling was trying to say nice things about the city, too. Still, he might want to be a little more careful with his research next time.
