Yesterday we wrote a lengthy column calling on the PGA Tour to embrace new media in the wake of revoking the credentials of blogger Stephanie Wei or get caught in the dust of the last century.

Well, surprisingly, the Tour is in fact moving forward with embracing new media.  The Tour promoted a Periscope stream from The Players Championship featuring player press conferences… a week after it banned Wei for using Periscope herself.

Hmmm…

In the span of a week, the PGA Tour went from banning a journalist for using Periscope to suddenly using the platform themselves.  Ironic, isn’t it?

That irony was not lost on several of the tour’s Twitter followers, these were among the immediate responses:

Because everything in life can be compared to a Simpsons episode, this is the equivalent of Moe stealing the Flaming Homer and selling it as a Flaming Moe.

This is just a totally shameless move from the PGA Tour.  They’re well within their rights to use Periscope and any other type of new media, but to do so themselves almost immediately after shutting down a journalist for doing the exact same thing is just poor form.  At the very least, it’s a soulless decision from the PGA Tour that will only serve to make its executives catch up with Roger Goodell and Gary Bettman on the likability scale.
