MLB Network announced on Monday that former Tampa Bay Rays (among others) first baseman Carlos Pena would be joining their stable of on-air personalities. Pena will be making his debut on Thursday’s editions of MLB Now and MLB Tonight.

The 36-year old Pena spent 2014 with the Rangers, and was released after playing just 18 games in the majors. Pena was an All-Star for the Rays in 2009 and finished in the top ten of AL MVP voting in 2007 and 2008.

I don’t know how good of an analyst Pena will be for MLB Network. But I’ve learned to defer to MLB Network when it comes to their on-air hires – they simply don’t make many mistakes.

I never would have pegged Pena for a job in television during his playing career, but it’s usually not the guys you expect that shine on TV.
