John Dowd, the former federal prosecutor who wrote the Dowd Report that resulted in Pete Rose getting banned from baseball, appeared on Mad Dog Unleashed on Tuesday.

Naturally, the situation immediately got heated between him and Chris Russo, and Dowd ended up hanging up on Russo about four minutes into the interview.

So Russo’s main point is that Dowd had no evidence that Rose gave less than 100% if he didn’t have money on a game. OK, that’s fine.

But it’s kind of silly to claim this doesn’t matter because Dowd has no evidence that Rose ever gave less than 100% during a game. Gambling on a game is gambling on a game, and it’s banned by baseball.

This shows me is that some people will continually go to bat for Rose while constantly ignoring what happened. It also shows me that with Rose, you never truly know the whole story.

In ten more years, we’ll probably find out that Rose bet on baseball as a player in the 1970s, and he’ll still get a pass from the same people that are giving him a pass now.
