The New Orleans Saints and Chicago Bears might be #1 and #2 on the list of most disappointing teams this season.  The Saints were seen as Super Bowl favorites and have had one of the most inexplicable roller-coaster seasons in recent memory, one that’s featured a lot more ups than downs.  Four losses in the final 2 minutes and overtime, a four game home losing streak for the first time since 1999, and yet the team still finds itself in first place in the NFC South.  It’s so bad that Sean Payton is having job reviews, benching guys, and releasing players in Week 15!

The Bears are 5-8 just like the Saints, but because of geographical divisional alignment, they’re already out of playoff contention.  Jay Cutler looks miserable (like always), Marc Trestman appears out of his depth, and an already terrible defense has been ravaged by injuries.

Unfortunately for ESPN, they can do nothing about this late season Monday Night Football matchup without the flex being made available to them.  And at least one of the players knows these teams don’t necessarily deserve the late season primetime showcase.  Bears WR Brandon Marshall said the game should be taken off Monday Night Football.  Via ESPN’s Bears blog:

Folks bill the upcoming matchup between the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints on “Monday Night Football” as the Underachiever Bowl, and receiver Brandon Marshall doesn’t disagree with that description of these two disappointing clubs.

In fact, Marshall believes the Bears and Saints don’t deserve the national stage of ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.”

“Yeah, they should take us both off ‘Monday Night Football’ right now,” Marshall said Monday during “The Brandon Marshall Show” on ESPN 1000.

While it’s a noble offer from Marshall, there’s nothing ESPN and the NFL can do.  It’s difficult to see flex scheduling coming to Monday nights purely from a logistical standpoint.  ESPN would love for it to happen some day though.  And to tell the truth, there have been way worse late season MNF games in recent memory.  At least there’s a playoff spot on the line here thanks to #LOLNFCSouth!  And with the 30th and 32nd ranked scoring defenses, we may get a 77-75 shootout.

Marshall will be watching the game on the sidelines with the rest of us.  The star receiver is out for the rest of the season with rib and lung injuries.
