Ratings News and Notes

The Washington D.C. TV market appears to be apathetic to their currently mediocre hometown NFL team as the regular season winds down. The Redskins’ 30-13 loss to the Chargers on Dec. 10 posted a 11.8 rating in D.C. from their local CBS affiliate. It ranked third among Week 14 NFL games within that market for Dec. 10-11, behind Steelers-Ravens (16.2 rating) and Cowboys-Giants (14.4). Even recent disappointing Redskins seasons in 2013 (26.6 local rating average) and 2014 (22.7) rated significantly higher. (Source: Washington Post)

The New England Patriots’ controversial 27-24 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Dec. 17 on CBS garnered the most viewers for an NFL telecast this season with 29.72 million. In the Boston market, the game drew a 39.7 household rating on WBZ-TV — the highest rating of any regular season game within the market over the past two years. (Source: WBZ)

Baseball’s winter meetings generated a ratings boost to MLB Network overall for the week of Dec. 11. One program that benefited was afternoon talk show “High Heat” with host Christopher ‘Mad Dog’ Russo which averaged 74,000 viewers for Dec. 11-15. It’s the show’s best five-day weekly average of 2017; two other weeks had drawn a higher average but the 79,000 viewer average in late-July was only across three days (July 24-25 and 28) and the 76,000 viewer average only factored four days in mid-October (Oct. 10-13). On Dec. 15, Russo made an on-air tribute to his former longtime radio partner Mike Francesa whose final show on New York’s WFAN station took place that afternoon.
