Ratings News and Notes

  • Athletic competition series American Ninja Warrior is already a hit for NBC. This summer, it has also boosted NBCSN. Last week, the show took six of the Top 20 spots for NBCSN’s most-watched telecasts of the week; this week, it’s among seven of NBCSN’s top-10, eleven out of its top-20.

  • Assisted by the final round of the “2017 U.S. Open” golf tournament from Erin Hills in Wisconsin, Fox won prime time on Sunday, June 18 among young adults. As golfer Brooks Koepka was completing his very first major victory, the telecast peaked with 8.3 million viewers from 8:45-9:00 p.m. ET. On the downside, though, it was the second-lowest rated (since 1981, only 2014’s 3.0 was lower), second-least watched (since 1987, only 2014’s 4.63 million was lower) U.S. Open final round on record.

Going back to June 15, the first round on FS1 drew 1.01 million viewers, down 35 percent from 2015 (1.54 million from June 18, 2015), the most recent non-rain-delayed U.S. Open first round.

The second round on June 16 averaged 1.24 million viewers, 23 percent below two years ago (1.61 million from June 19, 2015).

This year’s first two rounds averaged 1.123 million viewers on FS1, up 29 percent from the rain-affected first two rounds of last year’s U.S. Open (FS1-only average of 873,000 viewers on June 16-18, 2016).

Overall, all four rounds across Fox and FS1 on June 15-18 averaged 2.7 million viewers, 10 percent above last year as well as three years ago (2.4 million each in 2016 on Fox/FS1 and 2014 on NBC/ESPN) but 23 percent below two years ago (3.5 million in 2015 on Fox/FS1). 2017 ranks as third least-watched U.S. Open within the past 23 years. • FS1’s Saturday afternoon baseball game of Tampa Bay Rays at Detroit Tigers on June 17 drew 519,000 viewers, down 17 percent from the year-ago FS1 Saturday game of Texas-St. Louis (June 18, 2016: 629,000 viewers).

  • Three of NASCAR’s races on FS1 June 17-18 mostly saw yearly declines:

    • NASCAR Monster Energy Cup Series: FireKeepers Casino 400 (3.144 million viewers) from Michigan on June 18 was down 9 percent from last year (June 12, 2016: 3.451 million viewers) and down 11 percent from two years ago (Quicken Loans 400 on June 14, 2015: 3.519 million viewers).

    • NASCAR Xfinity Series: Irish Hills 250 (1.106 million viewers) from Michigan on June 18 was down 15 percent from last year’s Xfinity race from Michigan (Menards 250 on June 11, 2016: 1.295 million viewers) and down 19 percent from two years ago (Great Clips 250 on June 13, 2015: 1.358 million viewers).

    • NASCAR Camping Truck World Series: Drivin’ for Linemen 200 (502,000 viewers) from Gateway Motorsports Park in Madison, Wisc. on June 17 was down 15 percent from last year (June 25, 2016: 593,000 viewers) but up 40 percent from two years ago that had then a start time of 10:23 p.m. eastern (June 13, 2015: 359,000 viewers).

  • NHRA drag racing continues to benefit airing out of NASCAR Monster Cup Series racing on FS1 Sundays. The NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals from Bristol, Tenn. on June 18 attracted 1.003 million viewers and 227,000 adults 18-49, up 24 percent (in viewers) and up 6 percent (in adults 18-49) from last year (June 12, 2016: 806,000 viewers/215,000 adults 18-49). It was up by a larger margin — up 68 percent — over two years ago when the Thunder Valley Nationals had aired on ESPN (June 21, 2015: 598,000 viewers).

  • ARCA Racing’s Corrigan Oil 200 from Michigan on FS1 on June 16 posted 340,000 viewers, down one-fifth from the year-ago race (426,000 viewers on June 10, 2016). It was a 362-percent improvement over two years ago (94,000 viewers on June 12, 2015) but that race had aired on the lesser-available FS2.

  • Coverage of 24 Hours of Le Mans auto racing across FS1 and FS2 on June 17-18 averaged 105,000 viewers, down 17 percent from FS1/FS2’s coverage last year (average of 126,000 viewers on June 18-19, 2016) and down 18 percent from two years ago (average of 128,000 viewers on June 13-14, 2015).
