On Friday morning, a bizarre media feud began, and naturally, it all started with a tweet.

On Thursday night, New York Daily News columnist Manish Mehta tweeted that former Jet Muhammad Wilkerson shouldn’t visit the Saints because he has “issues with alcohol.”

On Friday morning, WFAN’s Boomer and Gio were discussing the story and got a surprise caller: Wilkerson’s mother, who defended her son and threatened legal action against Mehta.

Wilkerson missed the final three games for the Jets last season, scratches which were reportedly tied to him repeatedly being late to team meetings. Ironically, in Week 15, Wilkerson was left at home by the Jets for their trip to… New Orleans.

Prior to Mehta’s comments on Thursday night, the only other time Wilkerson has been publicly tied to alcohol was after a 2012 car accident, when he was charged with careless driving and was *not* under the influence of alcohol.

It’s pretty shocking to see a player’s mother call in to a radio show to defend him, but given Mehta’s seemingly baseless report and the effect it could have on her son’s future earnings, the reaction from Wilkerson’s mother doesn’t seem that far out of line.
