Ratings News and Notes

  • The tweets of ESPN’s Jemele Hill that labeled Donald Trump as a “white supremacist” generated many reactions by those in the media, with those from FS1’s Jason Whitlock among the more notable. He was a guest on the Sep. 13 edition of the Fox News Channel morning program “Fox & Friends.” At the end of the segment, the show’s hosts mentioned that they’ll be watching Whitlock’s daily afternoon program “Speak For Yourself” on FS1.

From Sep. 13 thru Sep. 22, “Speak For Yourself” had averaged 79,000 viewers, which was 20 percent below the show’s weekday average from Aug. 21-Sep. 12 (99,000 viewers). But the recent declines may not be directly correlated to Whitlock’s commentary on Hill — FS1’s other daily programs “Undisputed” for Sep. 18-22 (144,000 viewers) was at a four-week low and the recently-launched “First Things First” (37,000 viewers) dipped to a three-week low.

As a huge positive: for the past five weeks, “Speak For Yourself” was up 73 percent (Aug. 21-25, Aug. 28-Sep. 1, Sep. 5-8, Sep. 11-14 and Sep. 18-22, 2017: 93,000 viewers) from last year (Aug. 22-26, Aug. 29-Sep. 2, Sep. 6-9, Sep. 12-15 and Sep. 19-23, 2016: 54,000 viewers).

  • There were ups and downs from last year’s editions for the various auto races that took place during the weekend of Sep. 22-24.

Experiencing increases from last year: FS1’s ARCA Racing’s Crosley Brands 150 from Kentucky on Sep. 22 — up 130 percent (108,000 viewers vs. Sep. 23, 2016 on FS2: 47,000 viewers)

Experiencing declines from last year: NBCSN’s NASCAR Monster Cup Series’ New Hampshire 300 on Sep. 24 — down 22 percent (1.992 million viewers vs. Sep. 25, 2016: 2.538 million viewers); NBCSN’s NASCAR Xfinity Series’ VisitMyrtleBeach.com 300 from Kentucky on Sep. 22 — down 13 percent (740,000 viewers vs. Sep. 24, 2016: 846,000 viewers); FS1’s NASCAR Camping World Truck Series’ New Hampshire 175 on FS1 on Sep. 23 — down 27 percent (337,000 viewers vs. Sep. 24, 2016: 463,000 viewers): FS1’s NHRA Racing’s Dodge NHRA Nationals from Reading on Sep. 24 — down 7 percent (223,000 viewers vs. Oct. 2, 2016: 241,000 viewers).
