Ratings News and Notes

  • The TNT coverage of golf’s PGA Championship on Aug. 10-13 averaged 1.17 million viewers, down 5 percent from last year (July 28-31, 2016: average of 1.239 million viewers) and the lowest average for the TNT-only coverage of the major golf tournament since 2012 (Aug. 9-12, 2012: average of 1.04 million viewers) as that tournament took place opposite the London Summer Olympics.

The thirteenth season premiere telecast of HBO’s football docu-series “Hard Knocks,” featuring training camp with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, delivered 671,000 viewers in its original 10 p.m. telecast on Tuesday, Aug. 8, which is the second-best mark for a “Hard Knocks” season premiere in five years. (The Houston Texans in 2015 posted 826,000 viewers).

The Buccaneers rose 32 percent from the L.A. Rams’ Hard Knocks opener from one year ago (509,000 viewers on Aug. 9, 2016), although that telecast had aired opposite the first Tuesday night of the Rio Summer Olympics.

  • NFL Network’s live preseason football game action for Aug. 9-13 (seven game telecasts) averaged 1.639 million viewers. Four of those seven games aired in year-ago comparable time slots and they averaged 1.715 million viewers, up 55 percent from last year (Aug. 12-15, 2016: average of 1.102 million viewers), with the obvious caveat that the 2016 games took place opposite the Summer Olympics.

  • MLB Network’s live baseball game action (not counting look-in coverage during “MLB Tonight”) for Aug. 7-13 averaged 217,000 viewers and 63,000 adults 18-49 from the twelve game showcase telecasts, up 2 percent (in viewers) and up 23 percent (in adults 18-49) from the year-ago week (Aug. 8-13, 2016: average of 213,000 viewers/51,000 adults 18-49 from eleven telecasts); also, down 26 percent (in viewers) and down 44 percent (in adults 18-49) from two years ago (Aug. 11-15, 2015: average of 294,000 viewers/112,000 adults 18-49 from eight telecasts).
