Ratings News and Notes

  • There were mixed results for the return of TNT NBA Thursday on Mar. 30, which had taken a 2-week break due to NCAA March Madness. In the early tilt, Chicago Bulls’ 99-93 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers (2.01 million viewers) was up 86 percent from the year-ago early Thursday game from Mar. 31, 2016, Chicago-Houston (1.08 million). In the nightcap, however, Portland Trail Blazers’ 117-107 win over the Houston Rockets (1.37 million) was down 22 percent from the year-ago’s L.A. Clippers-Oklahoma City (1.76 million).
  • The Golden State Warriors continue to be the NBA’s current top ratings draw. Their 113-106 victory in Houston over the Rockets on NBA TV on Tuesday, Mar. 28 drew 748,000 viewers. Thru Apr. 2, this marks as the NBA TV’s most-watched telecast of the 2016-17 season to-date, surpassing the previous top mark of 627,000 viewers by the Nov. 25, 2016 Warriors-Lakers game.
  • There were three tournaments on Golf Channel from Mar. 30-Apr. 2.
    • The controversy and uproar over the rules infraction committed by LPGA golfer Lexi Thompson during Apr. 1st’s third round but penalized for it during the final round of the ANA Inspiration on Apr. 2, which was alerted to the sport’s officials by a television viewer, helped draw additional attention to the tournament. Live coverage of the four rounds from Mar. 30-Apr. 2 averaged 319,000 viewers and 52,000 adults 18-49, up one-fifth and one-third, respectively, from last year’s ANA (265,000 viewers/39,000 adults 18-49 on Mar. 31-Apr. 3, 2016). As for the Apr. 2nd final round itself, it marked significant increases of 38 percent in total viewers (551,000 vs. 398,000) and a whopping 189 percent in adults 18-49 (110,000 vs. 38,000) from the year-ago final round on Apr. 3, 2016.
    • There was a slight viewer decline from last year for the live four-round coverage of the PGA Tour’s Shell Houston Open from Mar. 30-Apr. 2 — down 8 percent in total viewers (657,000 vs. 712,000). As a positive, it grew 2 percent among adults 18-49 (107,000 vs. 105,000).
    • Live coverage of the Champions Tour’s Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic from Mar. 31-Apr. 2 averaged 218,000 viewers and 41,000 adults 18-49; +9 percent and -7 percent, respectively, from the 2016 tournament on the year-ago weekend.
