One of the worst kept secrets in sports media was confirmed this month with Chris Berman stepping down from his role as ESPN’s lead NFL host. Berman will take on a new role at ESPN where he will make special appearances for the network but not work a full NFL season.

With the NFL season winding down on Championship Sunday, ESPN pulled out all the stops to pay tribute to Berman as well as long time partner Tom Jackson, who parted ways with ESPN before the 2016 season began.

First, ESPN took the unique step of naming their NFL studio after the pair, the first time the network had ever done that. Second, ESPN aired this video package as a tribute to Berman and Jackson’s work on NFL Primetime. It was a show that made them both household names and before the advent of social media and the internet, was the ultimate highlights show.

You can’t say it about many television shows in sports, or in the entire medium for that matter, but NFL Primetime truly was revolutionary. Given the way sports television has changed and more specifically, the way highlight shows are going extinct, it might be safe to say that we’ll never see a show like that again.
