Verne Lundquist’s voice has become synonymous with the NCAA Tournament, SEC Football, the Masters and the PGA Championship. In 40+ years in sports broadcasting he has more memorable calls to his credit than one can list and his folksy demeanor has earned him the nickname “Uncle Verne”. Others have referred to him as “The Golden Throat”. All of which is why he’ll be honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for Sports at the 37th annual Sports Emmy Awards.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced the honor Thursday. The ceremony will take place at Jazz at Lincoln Center on Tuesday, May 10th.
“Verne Lundquist is one of the most iconic voices in sports television,” said Bob Mauro, President, NATAS. “He has delivered some of the most memorable calls, from ‘Yes Sir’ to an ‘Answered Prayer.’ From his days with the Dallas Cowboys, through many a Masters Golf Tournament to Olympic figure-skating competitions not to mention numerous NFL and College football games, Verne’s educated, entertaining and insightful look into the world of sports has been a treat for all viewers. It is with great pleasure that the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences honors him with the prestigious Emmy® Award for Lifetime Achievement in Sports.”
Lundquist’s storied career started as a sports anchor in Dallas with WFAA as well as Austin for KTBC. He soon became the radio voice of the Dallas Cowboys and worked for the Cowboys Radio Network from 1967 to 1984. He started working for ABC Sports in 1974 and stayed with them until going to CBS in 1982. He stayed with CBS until 1995 when he moved to TNT for a few years before returning to CBS in 1998.
