John Scott’s career may be over, but it appears he might not be walking away from the game for good. Tim Graham of the Buffalo News reports the 33-year-old has been approached by TSN to become an analyst.
“A few months ago, Scott was convinced he would need his Michigan Tech engineering degree upon retirement. Now he’s optimistic the All-Star exposure and subsequent networking will lead to a lifelong hockey career. TSN has approached him about being an analyst.”
Transitioning to a broadcast career would be a pretty amazing way to end one of the most bizarre individual seasons in NHL history.
Scott was one of the last of a dying breed of enforcers in the NHL when fans jokingly voted him as captain into the All-Star game. What followed was a saga that’s literally being turned into a movie. Scott was traded and sent to the minors (in a move likely orchestrated by the NHL) as the NHL attempted to block him playing in the All-Star game. With plenty of fan outrage, the league eventually allowed him to go, and Scott in true underdog fashion was named All-Star MVP. Scott spent the rest of the season in the minors, except for one final game with the Montreal Canadiens, after which he decided to go home instead of returning to the AHL.
Scott would make for an interesting choice on the TSN Panel. He’s gained plenty of media experience in his whirlwind year and proved to be very well-spoken in interviews. He’s also become one of the most well-liked players in the NHL. Whether the reported interest is legitimate, if Scott wants a broadcast career, there should be plenty of options.
