Mike Tirico

The sports media world has been buzzing over the last couple of days over the New York Daily News report that the NFL put the kibosh on Mike Tirico calling Thursday Night Football on NBC. After the NFL issued a statement over the whole thing, the buzz quieted down, but the buzz started back up again on Sunday when Dan Patrick and Tirico were doing a crossover after the men’s basketball gold medal game.

With Patrick in the International Broadcast Center and Tirico at Maracanã Stadium for the Closing Ceremony, DP made a comment about a green pocket square that was adorning Tirico’s suit and out came the snark from the former Monday Night Football voice.

The comment itself is a bit hard to distill the exact meaning of. Our read is that this was a bit scripted with Dan being in on the joke lobbing it up for Tirico to basically say “Have fun doing football this fall, which it looks like I won’t be doing.”

It’s definitely an A+ subtle crack on the NFL but the NFL is so sensitive and competitive, who knows how pissy they’ll get over this.
