It is a really, really, really, reallllllllly big deal when ESPN’s College GameDay travels to a new location that is outside the norm of their regular rotation. It always seems like GameDay will make their trips to Alabama or Ohio State or Florida State or Notre Dame or the other major contenders. And sure there’s the times that Washington or West Virginia or even Northwestern get to host, but usually it ping pongs around the Power Five conferences.  However, one of the best things GameDay has done in recent years is making at least one special trip a year to a non-traditional site.

This week the College GameDay traveling road show is making their first ever visit to Kalamazoo, Michigan to catch the undefeated Western Michigan Broncos of P.J. Fleck as they host Buffalo.  In fact, it’s the first visit to a MAC school for GameDay since 2003.  In that timespan, GameDay has even made visits to D-III Williams and FCS schools Harvard and North Dakota State.

Just how big of a deal is this in Kalamazoo? One local establishment is telling WMU students to be on their best behavior with the self-proclaimed worldwide leader in sports in town.

My guess is that when GameDay goes on the air on Saturday morning, that friendly piece of advice will already have been thrown out the window several hours earlier. Maybe someone will even recreate it as a GameDay sign, complete with the backwards “2” instead of the “S.”
