Thursday night, Boston Bruins play-by-play announcer Jack Edwards was reminded of a valuable life lesson for anyone covering a sporting event. Always give the pronunciation guide in the team notes a once-over to make sure there aren’t any names you’re going to get tripped up on.

The Bruins took on the Detroit Red Wings Thursday and as soon as Detroit center Andreas Athanasiou received the puck, you could feel Edwards’ brain slowly turn to mush.

“Beleskey takes a chop at the puck, and Andreas Atha…Athash…Easy for you to say. Athana…Atha…Ha…Athathanasiou. That’s gonna make some highlight reels, I can tell already.”

Somebody at NESN just got themselves a new job as of Friday morning: Jack Edwards Pronunciation Guide Coordinator. First thing that person is doing?

Athanasiou: “ahn–DRAY-uhs ath-an-AYZH-yew”
