The Rams return to Los Angeles appears to have not been welcomed with open arms in Southern California. At least not in the ratings thus far.

For this past weekend, the Rams game against New Orleans which was aired locally at 10 a.m. registered an 8.4 rating in Los Angeles. Two other NFL games which were shown in the market on Sunday, Carolina-Oakland in the 1:25 p.m. window and Kansas City-Denver in primetime received higher ratings, 13.3 and 12.6 respectively.

And the Notre Dame-USC game which was played the day before on ABC at 12:30 p.m. PT averaged an 8.5 rating so the Rams were beaten by the Trojans this past weekend.

But again, one caveat is that the Rams were playing at 10 a.m. PT so fewer people were watching at that time.

Dan Caesar of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch notes that the Rams’ ratings in SoCal to-date have been lower than what they were in their previous home of 21 years:

For the season, Rams games have been seen in an average of 9.4 percent of homes in the LA market. If a contest in London that began at 6:30 a.m. in Southern California is thrown out, that figure goes up to 9.8. Meanwhile, five Rams games this season have been shown in St. Louis and have averaged a 7.2 rating here (8.0 discounting that London game, that started at 8:30 a.m. Central time).

In contrast, the worst rating the Rams ever drew during their St. Louis days was 10.9, and that came in 2013 when the Cardinals were playing a World Series game at the same time. The Rams, who have lost six of their last seven games, haven’t drawn a rating above 10.6 in LA this year since Week 2.

So the Rams aren’t necessarily burning up the ratings in Los Angeles, but consider it is a bigger market than St. Louis with more TV households and thus there’s a larger sampling of viewers.

With this being the first season back in LA since 1994, viewers are still getting used to seeing a local team. The Rams will be back in the early window on Sunday when they play the Patriots so the numbers for Week 13 may be similar unless there are a lot of Tom Brady fans watching at 10 a.m.
