It was one of the cuter stories that emerged from last year’s U.S. Junior Amateur Championship. Fox’s Holly Sonders made a bet with 16-year Andrew Orischak that if he won the tournament, she would be his date to his prom. Orischak seemed to be on his way to a prom date with Sonders as he was leading by five strokes in the final with eight holes to play, but unfortunately, he had a massive collapse and lost.

But Sonders promised to go through on her side of the bargain saying she would still go to the prom with Orischak. All looked good.

But a funny thing thing happened. As the Island Packet newspaper was doing a follow-up to the story, it found that BOTH Sonders and Orischak will be playing in golf tournaments at the same weekend as the prom is to be held. Orischak will be at a tournament in his native South Carolina while Sonders will be playing in the Derek Jeter Celebrity Invitational in Las Vegas. While Orischak says he’ll be making every possible effort to make it back to his prom, it will be impossible for Sonders to fly cross-country to be his date.

Orischak told the Island Packet that he really didn’t feel Sonders was going to be his date in the first place:

“I’m not sure it was ever going to happen,” Orischak said recently. “I don’t think it was ever really a serious thing.”

And he added that he hasn’t spoken to Sonders since last summer so unless Sonders suddenly cancels her commitment to Jeter’s tournament, it’s apparent that the date isn’t happening. Oh well.
