Facebook’s Trending Topics has been a source of controversy in recent months.  Earlier this year, there were allegations that Facebook suppressed news stories that were more politically conservative in nature from their trending bar even if they actually drew enough traffic to be considered “trending.”

On Saturday, Facebook’s trending topics drew attention for another reason – its inability to distinguish Premier League clubs.

This appeared as the top trending topic on Saturday afternoon, one about Liverpool spending “big money” on the right player during the transfer window.

That was a bit confusing as the Reds have splashed quite a bit of cash on Sadio Mane, Loris Karius, and Georgino Wijnaldum as big additions this summer.  Once you clicked the link and saw the picture and article with the story, it became even more confusing.

Wow, Jurgen Klopp has really let himself go!

Naturally, that would be Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger.  He does not manage Liverpool.  Indeed, Arsenal has only seen Granit Xhaka emerge as a major transfer in to the squad.  Wenger tried to snatch Jamie Vardy from reigning EPL champs Leicester City and failed but is now rumored to be pursuing star LCFC winger Riyad Mahrez.

Alas, today we learned the Facebook machine is not perfect.  Maybe Trending Topics should just stick to what’s really important.
