ESPN is at it again with another great topic in their 30 for 30 series with one that will showcase the 1994-95 Nebraska Cornhuskers football teams that won consecutive national championships, and are argued to be a pair of the best teams to ever compete.

The 1994 squad finished 13-0 on the season and capped off their national title with a win over the Miami Hurricanes in the Orange Bowl.  The next season was much of the same, as the 1995 team also ran the table at 12-0, and finished the year with a blowout win over the Florida Gators in the Fiesta Bowl.

The film is expected to be finished early in the spring so it can be entered in film festivals, which is a typical practice by ESPN, according to producer Eric Drath.

Drath told WOWT6 Sports Director Ross Jernstrom that even people who aren’t fans of football can enjoy the story too, which he learned when he began to do his research on the team:

“Well when I first looked into the story it was just about the football and I said what a great football story and then when I started doing some research and all of the off the field stuff that was going on I was like wow my journalistic instincts picked up and I was like this is a much deeper story and it’s a human interest story too what these went through some of the things they did and obviously how they pulled it together to win these championships.”

Aside from the great success that the Huskers had on the field, Drath says that the off the field incidents will also be highlighted in order to capture the entire story. “All stories have good and bad that’s what makes a good story,” he said.

When discussing the story, Drath describes it as, “bigger than one player, it’s bigger than one incident, it’s bigger than all of the incidents, it’s really a story of you know trouble, a story of greatness, a story of perseverance, and ultimately victory.”

Based on his resume, and the topic of discussion, it sounds like we’re going to be in for one great 30 for 30. The timing isn’t bad either, as many people have been quick to call Nick Saban’s Alabama teams the best ever. A little reminder in 30 for 30 form should be refreshing.
