Reporters who ask Bill Belichick a question during a press conference are not expecting a verbose or elaborative response. That would be like hoping for a rainstorm in Death Valley. death But still, they’re probably hoping for better than the famously terse Patriots coach offered Tuesday.
Anyway, there are a lot of questions here, and Belichick wasn’t answering any of them.

Is Edelman the backup QB? Belichick: "We'll do what's best for the football team."

Will Edelman practice at QB today? Belichick: "I don't know."

Fair to say you don’t have a diagnosis for Garoppolo?
Belichick waited 11 seconds: He’s been looked at. He’s been treated.

Belichick did, however, respond in more than one sentence in order clarify the difference in job description between a coach and a medical staff.

Belichick: I coach the team. The medical people handle the injuries. They don’t call plays. I don’t do surgeries. We have a great deal there

Belichick: Let me put it a different way, I’m the coach. I do what’s best for the football team. I don’t know why you cant understand that.

What a charmer, right?
Obviously, Belichick doesn’t have to give detailed answers if he doesn’t want to, and no reporter has a god-given right to know who’s the Patriots’ backup quarterback. Still, it might be nice to see a coach extend some professional courtest to writers who are just trying to do their jobs. Plenty of coaches have found nice ways to say absolutely nothing at press conferences, and there’s no good reason for Belichick to be a jerk about it.
Alas, we can’t force Belichick to be nice to the media. All we can do is whine about his curtness and make fun of how he dresses.
