It’s been a while since the Mets have been good. Fans have been starved for a winner and have had to endure years of bad teams. But that has changed thus far this season with the Mets riding an 11 game winning streak going into Friday’s action against their cross-town rivals, the Yankees.

During the winning streak, the Mets fans have responded by watching the games on SNY in increased numbers. Richard Sandomir of the New York Times reports that viewership for Mets games has jumped by 47% from last year to an average of over 253,000.

By comparison, the Yankees on YES are seeing a 21% drop from last year to 267,000 viewers down from 288,000 in 2014 which was Derek Jeter’s final season.

Just two years ago, the Yankees were doubling the Mets viewership. But that has changed as the fortunes of both teams have gone in opposite directions since the Mets’ nadir.

Sandomir says the highest viewership for either team this season was Tuesday’s Mets win over the Phillies in which SNY saw an average viewership of just over 429,000.

When the Yankees were at their peak on YES, the network regularly saw viewership of over 400,000, but the viewing trend is heading down. While this season’s viewership is ahead of the worst showing of 244,000 viewers in 2013, that could change if the Yankees continue to struggle.

For now, Mets fans have plenty of reasons for optimism and if the team keeps winning, SNY has to feel confident that its viewership will continue to spike.
