CHICAGO, IL – AUGUST 06: Television broadcaster Ken “Hawk” Harrelson chats with fans during a break between innings as the Chicago White Sox take on the Texas Rangers at U.S. Cellular Field on August 6, 2014 in Chicago, Illinois. Chicago White Sox fans listening for Hawk Harrelson’s voice over the next week and a half won’t be hearing it – Harrelson won’t be with the Sox on their 11-game road trip that started on Monday because of what CSN Chicago described as a “minor surgical procedure.” The radio voice of the Chicago Bulls, Chuck Swirsky, will be subbing for Harrelson.

Harrelson obviously isn’t *choosing* to miss this road trip, but this is probably isn’t a bad one for him to miss. The White Sox play 11 games in four cities over the trip, which includes a doubleheader in Baltimore on Thursday in between visits to Toronto and Houston. The Sox have also lost six out of seven, and he really doesn’t need any more stress in his life.

A year ago, Harrelson kicked around the idea of scaling back his road broadcast schedule because of his long commute to Chicago and his grandkids growing up and starting to play youth baseball. Obviously, this medical situation is a completely different animal and something that shouldn’t be taken lightly by Harrelson and the White Sox. Hopefully in a week and a half when the Sox return to US Cellular Field, Harrelson is behind the mic for the team’s series with the Tigers.
