Last week we told you about a totally bizarre and totally random factoid that came from the SportsCenter Twitter account. For the first time, well, ever, SportsCenter tweeted out an AP Top 11 rankings. Not a Top 5, not a Top 10, not a Top 25… a Top 11.
So why the crooked number from out of nowhere?
After seeing who the 11th ranked team was (Florida), almost every college football fan immediately reverted back to the “ESPN SEC Bias” conspiracy theories. And honestly, who could blame those fans? ESPN just suddenly decides to promote the Top 11 when a team from the conference network they operate is ranked 11th? Think of the optics, people!
New AP Top 11:
1. Ohio State
2. TCU
3. Baylor
4. Michigan State
5. Utah
6. Clemson
7. LSU
8. Alabama
9. Texas A&M
10. Oklahoma
11. Florida— SportsCenter (@SportsCenter) October 4, 2015
Did SportsCenter show consistency and also rank the Top 11 this week? No, of course not. It was back to the good old fashioned Top 10, with an ACC school ranked 11th. That school was Florida State, who has a history with feeling aggrieved by ESPN. And the university’s football account let SportsCenter know about the slight.
