The Atlanta Hawks have been all the rage in the NBA this season. Their 17th straight win last night now puts them in the Top 15 of all-time NBA winning streaks. At 38-8, they have the best record in the Eastern Conference by 7 games and are doing it with a perfectly assembled lineup of guys who have never been considered as star players.
They’re also having a blast on social media, where the Hawks Twitter page has quickly become one of the most entertaining follows in sports. Following the groundbreaking style of the Los Angeles Kings, the Hawks Twitter page is full of personality, fun, and lots and lots of emojis.
Here’s how the team live-tweeted their 113-102 win over the Nets last night.

And it’s not just their tweets, it’s how they’re using other facets of Twitter as well. Long ago the Hawks decided to add an extra “W” to their name for each game of the winning streak. Cute idea, right? Well, Twitter only allows for names that are 20 characters long, so the Hawks had to ditch the “H” from their name and add it to their profile picture. At least the team isn’t going small-town Ohio crazy and legally changing the name of the franchise to “aWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWks” because they might have trouble fitting that on a jersey.
This is what social media should do for a team – make it more fun to be a fan. And with their quirky style and love for emjois, the Hawks are doing just that. Of course, it’s probably easier to enjoy and bask in the social media love when your team is winning. I’m not sure the people running @Sixers are having this much fun.
Ok, maybe they are…
