It’s been a bit of a depressing season for San Francisco 49ers fans with the former perennial contender taking a nosedive after an offseason exodus like the NFL has never seen.  Players retiring in their prime, players getting injured, players joining new teams.  Oh, and the old coach who was run out of town seems to be doing pretty well for himself at his new gig.

But when the media starts to disappear?  That’s when you know things are really bad.  Here was the crowd for new starting QB Blaine Gabbert’s press conference this week that consisted of… Blaine Gabbert.

There was an explanation for this as apparently Gabbert wasn’t listed on the press schedule… but I can’t think of a more fitting picture to symbolize this 49ers season.  The team that made the last three NFC Championship Games… that had so many colorful characters and optimism and Super Bowl aspirations… is now at the bottom of the NFC with Blaine Gabbert talking to himself in an empty room.  How the mighty have fallen.
