Earlier this week it came to light that Georgia running back Todd Gurley was suspended indefinitely from the team for violating NCAA rules by signing autographs in exchange for money.

Georgia fans aren’t taking this sitting down. A petition has been established at the White House web site asking President Obama to pardon Gurley so he can play this season. As of this writing, about 8,800 fans have put their names to the petition. The drive needs over 91,000 to go for the White House to even consider the idea. Once the threshold is hit, the White House will have 30 days to consider the petition. By that time, it’s likely the NCAA or Georgia will have resolved the issue.

This petition seeks to “free Todd Gurley from any possible wrongdoing.” It joins other requests that ask the White House to get a memorial skate park built, stop wild horse round-ups, prevent people from nations infected with Ebola from entering the United States and investigate the Jehovah’s Witnesses.

For now, Gurley remains on the sidelines and he’ll have some consolation that fans from all over the country are signing the petition in hopes of getting the President to issue a pardon. Seeing that the White House currently has over 100 open petitions, it may be a while for the Gurley petition to reach the President’s desk.
