The whole idea of having the WatchESPN app is to be able to watch sports when you’re away from your TV. It’s nice to be able to watch either on your laptop, mobile or tablet. However, when too many people try to watch at once, everything crashes.

That’s what happened to ESPN today for the USA-Germany game. The Watch ESPN app has either crashed or been totally off for users across the country. This was acknowledged today by ESPN at halftime as more than 1.4 million streams were accessed.

And the Univision Deportes app was also streaming USA-Germany, however, that has had streaming issues as well.

No other statements from ESPN regarding the streaming issues to date.

UPDATE, 3:00 p.m. ET: ESPN says there were 1.7 million steams of USA-Germany and acknowledging buffering issues “at the start” although many like yours truly had trouble throughout the game.
