The NHL Awards are a cold mess. I’d say they were a hot mess, but that would be a real insult to hot messes everywhere who work hard at what they do. The Las Vegas-held ceremony is silly, poorly-written, and overall really doesn’t mesh with the NHL’s image whatsoever.

There was, however, one moment of genuine enjoyment to be had at the ceremony, on a skit taped at the red carpet entrance. NHL Award nominees (and a couple of eventual winners) Ben Bishop, Tuukka Rask, Zdeno Chara and Dominic Moore faced off in the world’s most popular version of hockey… bubble hockey. NBC play-by-play man Mike Emrick was there to introduce the cover athlete for EA Sports’ NHL 15 (which he will be the new voice of when it comes out this fall), and happily obliged by calling the games.

Part of me wants to believe that no one really asked our pal Doc to do this, he was just there and kind of did it. With no Olympic water polo until Rio in 2016, Doc’s summers are largely free. We’ll take this moment, which shows of Emrick’s senses of fun and humor, as our last moment to hear from him until October, when hockey finally returns.
