US Men’s National Team goalkeeper Tim Howard is backtracking on some controversial comments he made about new Fox analyst (and former Howard teammate/rival) Brad Friedel in his autobiography, The Keeper.

In the book, Howard claimed that Friedel blocked his move from MLS to Manchester United in 2003. Friedel vehemently denied the charges, saying that he refused to sign a letter on behalf of Howard because it contained several exaggerations that he didn’t feel comfortable attaching his name onto. Friedel wanted an apology for Howard distorting the truth, and as a result, Howard will be removing the segment from his book talking about Friedel’s opposition of his move.

It’s pretty wild that Howard and Friedel never cleared the air with one another before the book was written, or even before it went to print. It’s pretty weak that Howard let the comments about Friedel stand without even trying to clarify them. Now, we’re left with an ugly situation that makes no one look all that great, and is probably going to end up costing Howard and his publisher a decent bit of money as the book gets amended.

It’s never easy, I guess. Would it really have been all that hard for Howard and Friedel to take care of this before the book went to printing? I guess so.
