Because we’re aware that most pro sports teams now have their own social media teams (or at least solo experts), we had assumed that all of them did. Clearly, that isn’t the case. Because as Marc Normandin at SB Nation points out, on Wednesday, the Toronto Blue Jays’ official Twitter account mistook itself for the Texas Rangers’ account.
So it turns out whoever runs the @BlueJays account is a #Rangers fan… #oops pic.twitter.com/XDxlzUvIby

One minute after that tweet was mistakenly posted — and deleted — by the Jays, it appeared on the Rangers’ timeline:
Miami picks up 2 runs in the 4th. #Rangers still lead this one 5-2 going to the 5th. #LetsGoRangers
— Texas Rangers (@Rangers) August 20, 2014
Apparently this isn’t too uncommon. Normandin links to a tweet from one MLB employee who appears to be managing the accounts of eight different teams, including the entire National League West.
The dangers of TweetDeck when you’re basically supposed to be rooting for several teams at once are obvious, but someone was logged into the wrong account at the wrong time and didn’t realize it before hitting send. No harm done, really, but we’re all entertained.
At the very least, this might present a new opportunity for any social media experts living in the Greater Toronto Area.
