10) Best Newsbreaker
Winner: Adam Schefter (ESPN)
Second: Adrian Wojnarowski (Yahoo)
Third: Jay Glazer (Fox)
The act of breaking news is becoming more and more important in the sports world as outlets chase for scoops. Nowhere is that more competitive than the NFL’s 365/24/7 beat. And no single reporter symbolizes that 24/7 presence breaking news quite like Adam Schefter.
11) Best Media Feud
Winner: Darren Rovell vs Richard Deitsch
Second: Michelle Beadle vs NBC
Third: Mike Francesa vs Keith Olbermann
While it was a great year for media feuds (and I’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for the brief war between the sports pope and Olby) there could only be one winner here. We all wait with great anticipation for Rovell v Deitsch VI.
12) Rising Star in Media
Winner: Kevin Burkhardt
Second: Rebecca Lowe
Third: Katie Nolan
This may be my favorite category because it represents the future of sports broadcasting. In the end, Kevin Burkhardt and Rebecca Lowe separated themselves from a very worthy field. Lowe has been a star with NBC’s English Premier League coverage and even had a hosting role at the Olympics earlier this year. But it’s Burkhardt who takes our award for what may be the most meteoric rise in sports media. A year ago he was an unknown on the national stage. Fox took a flier on a guy doing Cowboys radio broadcasts on Compass Media and sideline work for SNY. Now, he’s called an NFL Playoff game for the network, has a central role in the network’s MLB coverage, and is arguably the #2 voice at Fox behind Joe Buck.
13) Sports Entertainer of the Year
Winner: Charles Barkley
Second: Jay Onrait & Dan O’Toole
Third: Johnny Weir & Tara Lipinski
For the first time, our People’s Sports TV Awards sought to honor an MVP for the year in sports media. Although the pairs of Jay & Dan and Tara & Johnny had a huge impact this year at Fox and NBC respectively, there is no more entertaining, valuable broadcaster than Charles Barkley. The Chuckster was a unanimous selection and a worthy recipient of our first ever Sports Entertainer of the Year Award.
