That awkward Sunday in between the NFC and AFC Championship Games and the Super Bowl can be a bit of a wasteland for sports fans.  The Super Bowl bye week finds us still fully engaged in football season and it doesn't matter if they played the game on an island of molten lava, the Pro Bowl is not an option.  Besides, the Royal Rumble is by far the better fake sporting alternative.

To fill the void, The Grammys took center stage in American culture last night in what is becoming the world's most expensive variety show masquerading as an awards show.  Thanks to the help of our video editor Josh Gold-Smith, we're here to recap the evening when robots began their ascent to world domination in GIF form.

There's so much going on here in this jam session between the Daft Punk reveal, Stevie Wonder, and a glimpse of Pharrell's hat that emerged as the major meme of the evening.

Let us always remember the 2014 Grammys as the night Smokey the Bear won Twitter.

Taylor Swift showed off her… uhh… epic dance moves for the world once again.

Paul McCartney was as surprised as anyone that a band who starred in the 1970s won Best Rock Album for a live concert that was taped in 2007 at an awards show in 2014.  Who would've thunk it!

Hunter Hayes sang underneath a giant quote from Johnny Depp, because if there's anything that could lead the world to positive change, it's a motivational quote from Jack Sparrow/Tonto/The Creepy Willy Wonka.  Hipsters all around the world are so putting that on their Instagrams…

Pink was always twirling, twirling towards freedom…

Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Chrissy Teigen snapped this picture of one of the same-sex couples getting married by Queen Latifah at the Grammys.  I really wish we could travel back in time to the 1910s and see what kind of reaction you would get to that sentence – both from the gay marriage perspective and in the threat of imperial rule returning to America.

While getting married at the Grammys is ranked somewhere just above getting married at halftime of a hockey game on the totem pole of public ceremonies, the important thing was the moment produced a golden opportunity for a tidal wave of Taylor Swift jokes.

And speaking of that, here's Taylor Swift breaking up with the Album of the Year award (via Deadspin)…

In the end though, Daft Punk was the big winners of the night as they collected Record of the Year and Album of the Year.  On a night when love of all kinds was celebrated, it was all about the Robot Hug.  What you don't know is that it's really been Milli Vanilli under those robot costumes this whole time.

Oh, and Pink is still always twirling, twirling towards freedom…
