I was pessimistic about ESPN sticking Dan Shulman and John Kruk in the right field bleachers at Wrigley Field for Sunday Night Baseball this week. But after watching the game, I can safely say that it worked pretty well. There was some awkwardness right off the bat after Yadier Molina hit a long fly ball to right field, resulting in Shulman craning his neck over the wall to see the play. But aside from that, there weren’t any major issues.

I also think that the broadcast seemed a little more loose and fun in the bleachers, with Kruk and Shulman getting Chicago-style hot dogs delivered to them and the pair letting a young Cubs fan help them out singing Take Me Out to the Ballgame. It was an interesting experiment that I would deem a success, though ideally, we won’t see it get beaten into the ground over the next couple of seasons.
