It’s been a frustrating year to be a Saints fan. Or a Saints player. And definitely the head coach. The perennial playoff team touted as a Super Bowl contender this year now finds themselves at 2-4 after their third crippling loss of the season in the final 2 minutes.
Sunday’s loss against Detroit was the worst yet, and that’s really saying something with how this season has gone. The Who Dats blew a 13 point lead in the final 4 minutes. So after the game, you could understand if Sean Payton (who isn’t exactly Doc Rivers when it comes to media relations) got a little testy with one reporter who asked about his game-ending strategy…
Payton is right in the regard that anything that didn’t work was always going to be second guessed. And given Saints RBs averaged 3 yards a carry, running out the clock on the ground wasn’t quite realistic. But he probably could have gone a little easier on this reporter without calling him out multiple times in such a forceful fashion. That made me hide for cover behind my computer screen.
Perhaps Payton should have channeled his inner Bill Belichick and just kept repeating “we’re on to Green Bay.”
