NBC analyst Eddie Olczyk has found himself in the discussion for a few various gigs around the NHL as we head toward the league’s off-season. It’s something that often happens for the high-profile analysts in any sport as the coaching carousel moves around every year. However, Olczyk’s not the one who’s found himself part of a discussion for one of his old teams.

WPXI, the NBC affiliate in Pittsburgh, is the proprietor of the image you see above that lists Pierre McGuire as a candidate for the Penguins’ GM job. Now, never mind that McGuire has, at no point, been rumored by anyone inside or outside the game to be interested in the job, and never mind that if he was, he used to work with two of the sport’s most prominent insiders in Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger, who would probably have the scoop. This still caused Penguins fans to freak out upon seeing that screenshot.

McGuire, for his part, has interviewed for NHL GM jobs in the recent past and had already kept himself out of the discussion. In an interview with TSN Radio’s Mitch Melnyk last Friday, he said “Honor matters to me, Mitch. Honor’s a very big part of how I choose to live my life and I would never do that to a friend.” Pierre and former Penguins general manager Ray Shero are old friends, and McGuire claims that even if team owner Mario Lemieux (also a friend of McGuire’s) asked, he wouldn’t take it.

By the way, can we talk about that screenshot one more time? WPXI, you are an NBC affiliate. You couldn’t find a better photo of Pierre McGuire, an NBC employee, than a picture from his days working at TSN?

So never fear, Penguins fans who are worried about this sort of thing. Even though, until he actually gets a GM job, we will never know how Pierre McGuire really would run a team, that’s not something you have to worry about. At least not until the next general manager gets fired.
