Yesterday, the Pac-12 Networks announced that season two of The Drive: Pac-12 Football will focus entirely on the 2014 UCLA football program. While last season split coverage between Arizona State and California, UCLA will be the main focus of these 15 30-minute weekly episodes that coincide with the Bruins’ football season.
“I think it’s an excellent opportunity for us to showcase UCLA, to showcase our program, our student athletes, and tell some compelling stories, some stories that maybe people aren’t privy to unless they get this behind the scenes access,” Head Coach Jim Mora said.
“Coach Mora has brought UCLA back to prominence with a new, unique identity. And, the unpredictable stories that unfold throughout a football season will provide viewers with an inside look at a first-class football program in a most compelling way,” said Pac-12 Networks President Lydia Murphy-Stephans.
The Bruins are coming off a 10-win season and have a potential Heisman Trophy candidate in QB Brett Hundley.
Mora also pointed out that this is not just a show about football – it will capture the balance between being an elite quarterback and student; of overcoming adversity, growing up, life and commitment. When asked if he was concerned that the behind the scenes look at the program would give opponents a competitive advantage, Mora noted that he has complete editorial control over what airs. Nothing will air without his approval, and if something does, it will be the last show that they do.
That seems to be a unique arrangement and quite a lot of power for a network to give away, but this is the age that we live in with conference networks giving inside access to their teams, players, and coaches.
The Drive will debut in early September.
